We need to be focusing and appreciating those movies who have managed to break through the typical gender roles and still be successful. I've come upon many movies but the ones that I particularly took interest in were "Titanic" and "The Hunger Games." Not only because these two movies are two of my favorites to watch but because both of them have two female main characters that defy classic female gender stereotypes and roles. Both women in the film are very different and come from very different backgrounds but what makes them similar is that they show us that we can control our lives and stand up for ourselves.
Rose who is the main character in "Titanic" ends up going against her mother by not marrying the man her mother had chosen for her. Rose stood up for herself because she didn't care that the man she was suppose to marry was rich and could support her family. She realized that she did not want to be controlled by her husband. She ended up leaving her previous ways behind and decided to follow her heart and choose the man who made her happy even if he wasn't from the same social class as her.
Katniss in " The Hunger Games" shows women that it’s acceptable to not look like a typical girl or act like one. Katniss hunts and gathers food for her family which is stereotyped to be the job of a man. Katniss knows how to fend for herself and does not need the help of her other male friends in the movie. She is a powerful, strong, and independent main female character in " The Hunger Games," and has managed to still be popular even if she isn't the stereotypical woman that we see in most movies.
In addition, in my opinion, there's nothing wrong with accepting gender roles. For example, women who want to be a stay-at-home mom, but this should be a personal choice, not something that movies are forcing or encourage them to do. The problem with gender roles is that they can cross a line and become oppressive. Gender roles are just that, roles. It is up to the viewer decided whether or not they are going to fill them. The best advice that can be given is to make sure, above all else, that you are fulfilling a role you want to be fulfilling, regardless of what the media teachers and shows you.
